America has no Allies in Iraq not even the Kurds

before SC resolution 1546. This resolution gives the facts mentioned in the
article further dimentions.
Who are America real allies in Iraq? Of course US has some
of them, but those are the men who have less power and zero popularity. Many
will think of Kurds as the allies who no one will doubt about their loyalty,
but those who think so are too much optimistic.
The two ruling parties in Iraqi Kurdistan, the one of
Mas’ood Barzani and the other of Jalal Talabani, seek just one thing:
maintaining they rule in Kurdistan.
This rule, and their militias as well, faced the most
serious menace immediately after the fall of Saddam when the US forces
started disarming them. The tow parties suddenly lost their influence in the
region and the great income they used to collect during a decade. They
started to send their members and cadres home. The oppressed citizens found
themselves free to say what they were afraid of to say during all past
years.
When the coalition forces faced the violent resistance in
Iraq the two Kurdish parties won again.
Now the Kurdish authorities realize well that their destiny
depends on the situation in middle and south of Iraq and the equation became
like this: The existence of America in Iraq is vital but in the same time
the dilemma facing the American in Iraq will make them gain much.
Once , while sitting with one of the enthusiastic members of
Talabani's party and a friend of him watching the conflict in middle of Iraq
in the TV I was expecting my friend to say bad things a bout the Iraqi
resistance when I saw him simling and heard him saying: that’s good, as much
as there are troubles in Iraq the Kurds will benefit.
That is a fact but nevertheless Kurds are not traitors, on
the contrary they are loyal to those who do them favor or whom they love,
and it was this characteristic of them that Saddam admired.
The public hoped that America will support them and diminsh
the influence of the two parties in political and economic life. There were
thousand of complaints and tens of demonstrations but when America turned to
support those parties lot of people felt that America betrayed them. At that
time the slogan “ long live marines” was common in the free newspapers, but
now there is no more such slogans.
Of course, there remain many of Kurds who still look at
America as a friend but most of them are supporters of the two ruling
Kurdish parties who seek the legitimacy in the events in Iraq. I wrote an
article in Kurdish: Falluja the source of legitimacy of Kurdish authority,
and whether this title is revealing or not, the fact remains unchanged:
America has no allies in Iraq, not even the Kurds. |
